Oceanside, New York-Students from two elementary schools in Oceanside won the naming competition for the Micro Tunnel Boring Machine (MTBM) of the Bay Park Transportation Project.

Sheila Gunther (Sheila Gunther) in Ocean School #8 Fulton Avenue Elementary School's sixth grade class of nine children chose the name Marsh-Mellow.

The State Department of Environmental Protection said in a statement that it was funded by Sophia Alata, Peter DeMarco, Hayden Deoda, Thomas Durand, Oliver Feinstein, Leo Hanlati, and Submitted by Roddy Lucas, Gabriela Nettuno and Nicolas Penha.

They chose Marsh-Mellow as the combination that represents the marshland of the Bay Park, and Mellow emphasized how the project will protect the natural ecosystem of the Bay.

Marsh-Mellow will soon be placed underground in Bay Park Shaft 2, where it will be assembled in preparation for the micro-tunnel.

Kristin Stea chose POSEIDON in the sixth grade of North Oceanside Road Elementary School, Oceanside School #5

It is an acronym for "Science Project to Eliminate Incredibly Harmful Excessive Nitrogen".

Poseidon was selected by Rocco Fontanelli, Sophia Kenn, Amelia Valentino and Matthew Vlahakis.

“The naming of MTBM is such an important and interesting moment for our project,” County Mayor Laura Curran said in a statement. "It not only demonstrates our commitment to working with the community, but also demonstrates the innovative and intelligent thinking of our next generation."

The naming ceremony was held at a key project milestone, immediately after the first MTBM was lowered into the shaft to start the micro tunnel to advance the Bay Park Conveyance project.

The Bay Park Conveyance Project will reduce nitrogen pollution in the Western Bay by redirecting treated water from the South Bank Water Recovery Facility (WRF) to the Cedar Creek Water Pollution Control Plant.
